Whales as Individuals

Project: Whales as Individuals

Source: Zooniverse

This project was really interesting! It’s all about classifying humpback whales. You draw a box around the tail of each whale and then you classify different parts of the tail like the center of the v, the highest and the lowest points, and the color scheme, and whether it is mainly black or what percentage of white was visible. The tails or flukes can help determine the individual whales and then you can learn the personality of the whale, the population pattern, and behavior of the whale. Zooniverse inputs these annotations I’ve made into a computer algorithm to match them to other whales they have been watching for years. I chose this project because whale watching is something my dad and I do together and I thought it would be interesting to observe these things the next time we go.
