The community project involved six Science National Honor Society members to arrive at Buckeye Elementary School to teach Mr. Gibson’s science class of seventh graders. The science lesson included a demonstration of the Elephant Toothpaste experiment, using 12% hydrogen peroxide and dish soap as a solution, and yeast mixed in warm water as a catalyst to the dish soap-hydrogen peroxide solution. Afterwards, the seventh grader science teacher then displayed a YouTube video of the Elephant Toothpaste experiment using 30% hydrogen peroxide. Afterwards we prepared for the class-participation experiment: cleaning pennies with different solutions. The students worked in pairs, each pair given a small plastic bowl, a rusted penny, two plastic spoons, a paper towel and of course, safety goggles. At the beginning of each experiment salt was poured into their plastic bowls, then the cleaning solution was added later, poured by one of the SNHS members. The students (with safety goggles on) would then place the rusted penny into the cleaning solution using their plastic spoons, and stir the solution to mix the salt and solution with the penny. After a minute or two the students would remove the penny from the solution with their plastic spoons and observe how the penny has changed. Three solutions were used as cleaning solutions: Lemon juice, orange juice, and vinegar.
I joined the project to gain an opportunity to teach science, a subject that I enjoy, and to place myself in the teacher’s shoes in the classroom. I have gained some knowledge from when I was a seventh grader myself to the present day, and can reflect the acquired information to the students in more recent terms in hopes that some students will gain some information and have their curiosity parked to further their education in the sciences.
My participation among the Buckeye Elementary classroom aided the community by contributing the passage of knowledge through inspiration of curiosity, sparking the scientific interest in students prior to their entrance into high school.
Science is a subject that explains and demonstrates the real-world applications science has directly with everyday life, allowing a direct connection between explaining and understanding the functions of the world through investigation and experimentation. With scientific knowledge students are able to achieve a greater comprehension of the world and further their curiosity and enter into the scientific field with knowledge to form solutions to current issues.
Having participated in the community project I have felt that I have brought a sort of demonstration to the students’ education, displaying that science remains an importance in higher education. In a way, I have shown how science can be fascinating in its simplest form. Overall it was an interesting experience to teach a science lesson to a class of seventh graders, and to interact with the students to discuss the experiments with them. In the end, the students gains some knowledge, and I acquired new experience.
